"FORGOTTEN LANGUAGE"

Shel Silverstein

Once I spoke the language of the flowers,

Once I understood each word the caterpillar said,

Once I smiled in secret at the gossip of the starlings,

And shared a conversation with the housefly in my bed.

Once I heard and answered all the questions of the crickets,

And joined the crying of each falling dying flake of snow,

Once I spoke the language of the flowers. . . .

How did it go? How did it go?

Ocean-Soaking Trees

With each Saian spring, the great forests that sustain life on the planet awaken and drink the oceans into their dry, porous trunks. Through biological processes, the trees use the water and nutrients from animals to grow in bright, beautiful colors. As each winter sets in, the trees release their water gradually, in great floods and waterfalls, into the sea to buffer the deep freeze of Saia's long orbit outward from its sun.
